Letcher County Criminal Court Cases
Letcher County uses the 47th Judicial District and the 47th Judicial Circuit. District Court hears misdemeanors, violations, traffic cases, arraignments, county or city ordinance matters, and felony probable-cause hearings. Circuit Court hears felony indictments and felony trials. Both sets of Letcher County criminal court records begin with the Office of Circuit Court Clerk at 156 Main Street, Suite 201, in Whitesburg.

Letcher Court Levels in Plain Terms
The label on a Letcher County court record shows where the matter stands. A misdemeanor can remain in District Court through disposition. A felony may first appear there for an arraignment or probable-cause hearing, then move to Circuit Court after grand-jury action. Kentucky city ordinance prosecutions also run through District Court, not a separate Whitesburg, Jenkins, or Fleming-Neon criminal portal.

Online information is useful for orientation, but a signed order or certified judgment still comes from the Letcher clerk.
A separate statewide option is the AOC One-Time Request. Its form asks for the requester’s name, address, city, state, ZIP, and phone, plus subject identity fields. The subject section accepts a first and last name, optional middle initial and alias or maiden name, and requires at least a Social Security number or date of birth. A driver-license number and address can also be supplied. The resulting report is mailed and costs the current AOC report fee. It is a court-index product across Kentucky, not a certified copy of the Letcher County case file.
CourtNet Access Has Limits
CourtNet is the Kentucky Court of Justice statewide case-information database, but CourtNet 2.0 is not an unrestricted free public name-search product. Its electronic access is for authorized or subscription users, and its media contact form is for media. Requesting Letcher Court Records

How a Criminal Case Moves
A felony-level Letcher County case can create entries in both courts. The sequence is not proof that every case reaches trial; a charge may be amended or dismissed, and a plea may resolve the matter. Read the docket for the actual path.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney presents felony evidence to the grand jury and prosecutes Circuit Court criminal-law violations. District Court handles the preliminary stage. After indictment, Circuit Court records the felony arraignment, motions, plea or trial, judgment, and sentence. The court file, not the initial booking charge, settles what was prosecuted.
Docket language should be read event by event. A citation or complaint may begin the case. A warrant, probable-cause hearing, or grand-jury action can follow. Later rows may show an amended count, pretrial conference, motion, order, plea, verdict, probation action, revocation, or closure. The most recent event does not always summarize the result, so look for the disposition on each count and then read the judgment and sentence. That sequence avoids mistaking a filed allegation for the final Letcher County court outcome.
When a Letcher File Is Stored
An older Letcher County criminal court record may be in the clerk’s active office, at a records facility, or lawfully destroyed under the judiciary’s retention schedule. If a public file is stored elsewhere, ask the clerk for both the record-facility number and the file-locator number. The State Records Center cannot conduct a name or Social Security number search.
Note: Severe weather has disrupted Letcher court operations before, so confirm current access by phone before a long courthouse trip.
Case Record Access & Restrictions
Public access does not make every Letcher County court item open. Juvenile, mental-health, domestic-violence, expunged, sealed, and other confidential matters are excluded or restricted. Public files redact Social Security numbers and protected personal data. Kentucky’s judicial access rules govern court files; an executive-branch request under the Kentucky Open Records Act is not a substitute for asking the clerk.
If a dismissal still appears, first identify the source. Ask the Letcher clerk to check a wrong court disposition, the arresting agency to check its report, or the repository to follow its correction process. A dismissal does not automatically erase all agency records. Kentucky expungement under KRS Chapter 431 is a separate legal process with eligibility rules.
KRS 61.870 through 61.884 govern executive-branch public records, including inspection duties and exemptions, but Kentucky courts operate under judicial access rules as well. This distinction matters when a request is denied or redirected. A sheriff’s incident report goes to the law-enforcement custodian under the Open Records Act. A Letcher County docket, indictment, judgment, or sentencing order goes to the Circuit Court Clerk. Ask for nonconfidential portions when a document contains protected information rather than assuming the whole case must be released.
